PGT-M Access Fund

Supporting families who need genetic testing to build a healthy future.

Preimplantation Genetic Testing for Monogenic conditions (PGT-M) can be life-changing, and life-saving, but it is often financially out of reach. The PGT-M Access Fund exists to help close that gap.

For many patients with known genetic conditions, PGT-M is not a choice, it is a medical necessity. Yet its cost remains a significant barrier. This Fund exists to ensure families are not denied the chance to build a healthy family because of financial barriers.

What is the PGT-M Access Fund?

The PGT-M Access Fund is a dedicated fund within Fertility Friends Foundation created to financially support individuals and couples who require Preimplantation Genetic Testing for Monogenic conditions (PGT-M) for medical reasons.

PGT-M allows embryos created through IVF to be tested for specific inherited genetic conditions before transfer. For families at risk of passing on a serious genetic disease, this testing is not optional. It is medically necessary.

Unfortunately, PGT-M is rarely covered by public or private insurance and can add thousands of dollars to an already costly fertility journey. The PGT-M Access Fund helps reduce this financial burden so families can make decisions based on medical need, not cost.

How the Fund Works

  • The PGT-M Access Fund provides financial grants to help offset the cost of PGT-M testing.

  • Grants are awarded through Fertility Friends Foundation’s regular grant application process.

  • Applicants may apply only to the PGT-M Access Fund or combine a PGT-M application with a fertility grant, depending on their needs.
  • Applicants must apply through Fertility Friends Foundation’s official grant application platform

  • Applicants will be able to apply specifically to the PGT-M Access Fund when the application platform opens.

  • Funds are disbursed directly to the fertility clinic, not to the applicant.

  • Grant amounts and the number of recipients depend on available funding and clinical need.

General Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the PGT-M Access Fund, applicants must:

  • Be Canadian citizens or Canadian Permanent Residents
  • Be followed at a Canadian Fertility Clinic as all PGT-M Access Fund grants are disbursed directly to Canadian fertility clinics
  • Have undergone or are planning IVF treatment that includes PGT-M testing
  • Be seeking funding for upcoming PGT-M testing. Fertility Friends Foundation does not reimburse expenses that have already been incurred.
  • Plan to proceed with the transfer of PGT-M–tested embryos within six (6) months following testing, demonstrating an active and ongoing plan to build a family.
  • Demonstrate a financial need related to PGT-M testing costs.
  • Demonstrate the ability to provide ongoing financial support for a child. At least one partner must maintain employment or a stable source of income.
  • Grants will not be awarded to cover or supplement PGT-M testing or fertility treatments that are fully or partially funded by a government program or other public funding source.
  • PGT-M Access Fund grants are awarded on a one-time basis. Previous recipients of a PGT-M Access Fund grant are not eligible to reapply for this fund.

Meeting general eligibility criteria does not guarantee funding; all applications are reviewed by our medical and financial committees.

Medical Criteria (PGT-M)

Applicants must also meet the following medical eligibility criteria:

  • Have a confirmed diagnosis or carrier status for a genetic condition or mutation for which PGT-M testing is medically indicated.
  • Provide medical confirmation of the indication for PGT-M from a fertility specialist or genetic professional, as documented in the required medical evaluation form.
  • Be willing to submit supporting medical documentation if requested as part of the review process.
  • Not have a medical condition that would pose a serious risk to themselves or, where applicable, to a pregnancy or resulting child (e.g., active acute infections), as confirmed through medical evaluation.

Each application is reviewed on a case-by-case basis by Fertility Friends Foundation’s Medical Committee
